Why organic cotton? Organic cotton only represents 1% of the global supply of cotton, yet it is better for the planet and people on so many different levels. Of that 1%, the United States is behind organic producing countries such as China and India, with most of the U.S. organic cotton coming out of a cooperative in Texas. Approximately 14% of all insecticides used in the world is used for cotton production and the GMO cotton seed is prevalent in the conventional cotton growing system. The chances are that if you are not wearing organic cotton you are wearing GMO (genetically modified at the DNA level) cotton.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is behind both sustainability and ethical processing standards so you know when you buy GOTS organic cotton it is ethical and environmental from farm to factory with workers paid fairly and the environment treated kindly in the growing and processing of organic cotton. In order to be certified as GOTS organic cotton there needs to be strict supply chain standards in place both at the farm and the factory. Farmers are paid a premium for the organic cotton, and allows for more food security as a secondary benefit. By having a stable income the farmer is able to provide a stable supply of food, allowing for proper crop rotation with the cotton fields. Within the factory waste water is treated properly, fiber processing is limited, and there is fair labor practice standard.
Additionally using organic cotton reduces the synthetic microfiber impact in our oceans and water supply. We often hear of the micro plastics in the depths of our oceans, yet we think it all comes from single use disposable and other non biodegradable plastics. Did you know synthetic fabric material also sheds microfibers into our water system? Current sanitation systems are unable to hold back these microfibers when they are processing waste water and release them back into our local water supplies. These microfibers are not only in our oceans they are present with us locally at home.
Not all organic cotton is certified by GOTS, however in the global community supply chain, this certification is helpful in knowing your purchase supports both sustainable and ethical standards. At GreenCaltura we support GOTS organic cotton in our premium beeswax wraps. This is one of many benefits we offer to you in our sourcing of sustainable products.
